Additive Manufacturing (AM) (also known as 3D-prining) is an umbrella term for different layer by layer technologies. Through the production of parts in layers new possibilities regarding the complexity as well as the geometry of a part open up. In addition AM offers an integration of functionality and lightweight design.
The changes AM as manufacturing technology brings go beyond the context of manufacturing. For example the impact AM has prior phases like R&D or the later phases of service and aftersales. This enables totally new product and productions strategies.
On the one hand side AM bares a huge potential for new possibilities of added value and new business models on the other hand it can be a risk to established manufactures and can have a disruptive influence on the market.
The FSTI has various research project within the field of AM and its business perspective and is working on research papers as well as guidelines for SMEs.
